Redeemer's University Commitment to Migration Awareness, Capacity Building, and Policy Advocacy
Redeemer's University is dedicated to addressing the critical issue of illegal migration through comprehensive outreach, education, and capacity-building programs. The university, through its Centre for Gender, Humanitarian and Development Studies (CGHDS), collaborates with the Migrant Resource Center of the Ministry of Labour and Employment to sensitize students and local communities on the dangers of irregular migration. This includes informing them about safe migration pathways and providing them with practical tools to avoid exploitation and human trafficking.
The event aimed to sensitize students in Osun State on migration issues, emphasizing the dangers of irregular migration while promoting safe and legal pathways for those seeking opportunities abroad. The university’s efforts extend to building awareness on migration, encouraging students to avoid falling into the trap of indecent employment or becoming undocumented migrants.
Furthermore, the university's initiatives include capacity building for policymakers and lawmakers, ensuring that key stakeholders are equipped with knowledge to develop effective policies that promote safe migration and protect vulnerable populations. The training workshops hosted by Redeemer’s University target students, community leaders, and policymakers, creating a multi-level approach to combating migration issues. The university also conducts research on the broader humanitarian crises caused by irregular migration, advocating for policies that tackle migration and displacement at both national and international levels.
Capacity-building programs have been a significant focus, where final-year students receive education on safe migration practices. These programs also engage local community leaders and relevant stakeholders, ensuring that the outreach reaches those most vulnerable to the risks of illegal migration. The university’s research has highlighted the humanitarian crisis that arises when individuals travel through irregular means, often resulting in exploitation, forced labor, and life-threatening situations.
This advocacy is part of Redeemer's University's broader mission to protect and empower its students and community members through education, research, and outreach programs aimed at mitigating the risks of migration and displacement.
